Core Concepts

Understanding these core concepts will help you get the most out of Gestallt.

Teams

A team is organized around one child. Everyone who supports that child—parents, therapists, educators—joins the same team and shares the same record.

  • Teams are created by parents (who become the Admin)
  • Team names are typically the child’s name or nickname
  • Each team has its own isolated data
  • Members can only see their team’s entries

Roles

Admin

  • Usually the parent who created the team
  • Can invite and remove members
  • Can update team settings
  • Full access to all entries

Member

  • Therapists, educators, and other team members
  • Full access to create, edit, and view entries
  • Cannot manage team membership
  • Can be part of multiple teams (for professionals)

Documentation Modes

Flexible Mode

Designed for quick capture without clinical overhead:

  • Phrase: What was said
  • Context: What was happening
  • Tags: Simple categorization
  • Date: When it happened

Clinical Mode

Adds structured fields for therapy planning:

  • GLP Stage (1–6): Developmental classification
  • Feelings: Emotional context
  • Location: Where it happened
  • Function: Communicative purpose
  • Source: Where the phrase originated
  • Notes: Clinical observations

Both modes write to the same entry. A parent can capture quickly, and the SLP can add clinical structure later.

Entries

An entry (or “gestalt”) is a single documented phrase with its context and metadata.

Every entry includes:

  • The phrase itself
  • Context description
  • Tags for organization
  • Date of observation

Clinical mode adds:

  • Stage classification
  • Feelings, location, function
  • Source attribution
  • Clinical notes
